He shouldn’t have let me borrow his car that day, but he did. Having dated Kevin for years, I was thankful that he trusted me with his sporty red car. It was always fun to drive, especially for a racer like me.
Making it to work safely, I got out of the car and went inside. The day was like any other day, until my manager walked up in the afternoon to tell me that I had a phone call. I went to the office, picked up the handset and said hello.
It was Kevin. He was angry! I’m not sure what about exactly, as this was over 18 years ago, but he was accusing me of something that I had not done. For a few minutes we argued over the phone, until I got tired of listening to him and hung up.
A short while later, he and a friend pulled into the parking lot across the street. They both climbed out of his friend’s car, rested on the front bumper and stared into where I was working. Kevin was still visibly angry, as he stood there throwing his hands in the air.
I spoke to my manager, who had been watching the whole situation unfold, and he approved for me to leave early. Sneaking out of the front door, I ran to the car, climbed into the drivers seat and peeled out of the parking lot.
As I turned right, I looked behind me to see that Kevin and his friend were close behind. Ahead was a green light, so I gunned it and made it through the light, but so did they.
We reached the next light and by then I was several car lengths in front of them. I made a quick right turn and then another immediate right into the parking lot of an apartment complex. Fortunately, there was an empty parking spot just to the right, tucked in between two larger vehicles.
I flew into the spot and turned off the engine. The engine was loud and would have been an automatic giveaway, if they had their windows down as they drove by. A few seconds later, as I peered through the window of the neighboring car, Kevin and his friend appeared. They slowed the car and looked around, and then took off again.
Having successfully escaped, I needed a place to camp out for the night. I couldn’t go home, because at the time his home was my home. So I waited a while, giving them time to be out of the area and then slowly crept down the parking lot to the street. There was no sign of them.
I took off again and within a few minutes, arrived at my girlfriend’s house. After hiding out for the night, I felt safe to leave.
The next morning was crisp and bright as I drove that, now stolen, sporty red car back to work to begin another day. Kevin did eventually get his car back, although that was the last time he let me borrow it.
True story.
Lesson: Be careful what you let people borrow. It may backfire on you.

I enjoyed your story and was looking for the prompts. When you were hiding in the parking lot it immediately brought to my mind “I wish you would have layered yourself with our Damsel in Defense personal protection products!” I am happy it all worked out and you didn’t need them. Thank you for liking my post! 🙂

I’m glad you got away from angry Kevin, mehowami. I was fearing for you in the chase scene and the aftermath. Wow.

Me too! It was fun though, and I’d probably do it again.

So he was angry about something not involving the car and showed up where you worked to confront you? ANd you ‘escaped’ using his car? I still stand on the premise that it was borrowed. Your record is clean! 🙂 Glad you were okay.

That’s right. He was angry at a rumor he heard about something completely off the wall. But, he did get to see just how much power his car really had. Thanks for giving me a clean record! 🙂

You know it’s the name Kevin right? I made the mistake of marrying my Kevin too many years ago.

People who have the same name do seem to have common attributes. I wonder why that is. Very odd.

I’ve actually never met a Kevin that I truly liked (well since I married one). Wonder why that is? lol

Ha! I’m that way with a few names too. Then there’s other whose name, I’ve never met anyone bad with that name. Names we love and names we run from.
