I Will Not Have a Good Day

angry woman

The other day while walking through the grocery store parking lot, I saw one of the cashiers walking toward the store. As we neared each other, I happily told her, “Have a good day!” to which she sternly replied, “I will not have a good day.”

For whatever reason, she had already decided that her day was going to be bad. Nothing was going to change it. Nothing could turn it around. Her mood was set.

A few years ago a man asked me, “Are you going to have a good day today?” He didn’t tell me to in passing, like most people do. Instead, he asked me what my choice was going to be. I decided that yes, I was going to have a good day, and I did.

Of course, a tragedy could have occurred and spoiled my plans, but thankfully nothing happened. The day was good.

I believe that for the most part (barring depression, mental conditions, unexpected tragedies, etc), we can decide what kind of day we will have. We can either set ourselves up for success, or we can set ourselves up for failure, like the lady at the store did. She made a choice; a choice to spend her day upset and angry.

Sometimes we don’t recognize that we’re the ones holding ourselves down. Instead, we blame the world, circumstances, and others. However, none of those things have control over us, no matter how it may seem. The only thing that has full control over us, is us; the man or woman in the mirror. That person has total control. They can either make our life wonderful, or make it miserable.

Our thoughts are very powerful. When we think negatively, it is shown in our behavior. Negative thinking places a dark cloud upon our life that weighs us down and makes our life miserable. A dark cloud that is caused by our own thinking.

On the other hand, when we think positively, we feel positive. We are happier, and the people around us are happier too.

We, and the life that we live are a portrayal of the unspoken words that we repeat in our minds. Therefore, we should make our unspoken words positive ones.

I do hope that the lady from the store changed her mood around. It’s sad when people set themselves up for failure, but I’m sure we’ve all done it. I certainly know that I have.

It takes a lot of self-discipline to learn how to control our moods, instead of letting them control us. But with practice, it does get easier. As a result, our life becomes better, more fulfilling, and a delight to live.

Positive thinking goes a long way. It’s worth practicing.

Wise words again. You’re right…..happiness is a choice some people do not make. Sad, but true. As for me and you…..we’re going to have a good day!

“Everything’s a choice…except bodily functions. Those are mostly involuntary.” – My dad. 🙂

Your post was very accurate…we do have a choice about how we plan to face the day. – thanks for sharing your thoughts.

  4. I agree, if I say I’m going to have a bad day it usually happens. If I choose to have a good day mostly that happens too. The mind is a very powerful thing.

  5. True words MeWhoAmI. If she has already committed herself to having a bad day that means the worlds has to work extra hard to “convince” her other wise, they have to work from the external to change her internal. It does take practice to get to be able to exert that kind of self talk and self control. But it is so worth the effort.

  7. YES! Positive thoughts matter! I have a daily challenge thing I do, and I always end it with “make it a great day!” because it is a choice we all get to make! Love this post!

That little voice in our heads can be directed toward the positive instead of the negative. I have been striving for that, and I’m having some success. Even the days I have no control (when depression strikes), I fight hard for the positive and I believe it will be a good day. I can’t tell you how many days—at the end of the day—I have cried because all the positive thoughts were just that. Thoughts. Thoughts that end up turning negative because I feel bad about myself for making the wrong choice—until I realize some of us simply don’t have control—which can go on for days, months, years. However, I can tell you that since I have been receiving professional help, there are far more positive days than negative—I never choose negative…I can’t figure out why some are determined to make a choice to have a bad day if it’s within their control.

I like how you made a note about mental illness 😉

You’re right about the little voice being redirected. It takes practice and some days are much, much harder than others, but in most cases it can be done. I know how you feel about issues going on for days, months and even years. But for me, throwing positive thinking into the mix, whenever possible, is what helps get me through times like that.

Negative thinking can destroy us, so like you said, I don’t understand why someone would purposely put themselves through that. It’s wonderful that you have been able to find more positive days these days. That’s definitely a step in the right direction. You’re welcome for the note. 🙂

My mom is a person who likes being in charge of everything. Yes, a control freak. It does have it’s positive side though. My brother and I were not allowed to have bad days, only bad moments. She declared that there wasn’t such a thing as an entirely bad day, that it just wasn’t possible. Because of this upbringing, I have yet to have a bad day, just bad moments.

What a great lesson she taught you. Bad moments are so much easier to handle than bad days. Whether there be one or many, that’s exactly what they are – bad moments. Great Mom you have.

Thank you for sharing it and I hope that it speaks to your friends like it did to you. Positive thinking, no matter what we’re facing, is so very important. Sometimes that is all that gets us through the hard times.
