One Life

juggling

This is my second post of June, and for all I know it could also be my last. I don’t know what tomorrow will bring any more than the next person. What I do know however, is that each of us have only one opportunity to live this life that we’ve been given. An unknown period of time to spend however we choose.

It is our life to live however we want, but we should choose wisely. Life is too short to throw away. It is too short to waste.

Many of us have families, but are too busy for them. We have so many priorities: earning degrees, working overtime, climbing the corporate ladder, deadlines to meet, schedules to keep, appointments to make, etc. We run so much and so fast, that we miss everything that is important.

“You can’t take it with you.” – That’s one of the truest statements that’s ever been made, yet most people seem to forget it. It’s not until they are lying in their deathbed that they realize that they’ve wasted their lives on things that were meaningless.

Out of the many funerals I’ve been to I’ve never heard anyone say, “I remember Bob. He had a big savings account, a huge house and a garage full of fancy cars.” People don’t care about what we had. They care about who we were. How we loved them. The memories we shared.

Why is it then, that we dedicate so much time and effort to things that, at the end, don’t even matter? Especially when what does matter, is placing dinner on the table while you let it get cold, or playing alone right in front of you.

I thought about that the other day with my son. I was so caught up with work, that he spent most of the day playing alone. A day that we could have…. should have been spending together. A day wasted. What if it had been my last? What memories did I leave for my son to hold onto? None.

We only get one life. A life that can be over in a blink. We should be mindful of that. It’s not a game that we can start over, or a movie that we can rewind. Once it’s done, it’s done. Therefore, we shouldn’t waste it. Every moment should count. Every day should be meaningful.

What did you do today? If it were your last, would you (and those around you) be satisfied with how you spent it?

  1. Love this second post in June. For some reason there have been many departures from this earth of people I know, for me this last few weeks (all over seventy). It reminds me of spending each day with the ones I love in a good way. We never know when our last day will be. Shine on and enjoy those days spent with your son. My boy does not ask for me to play with him as much but the other day he just wanted me to watch him play Mario Cart. So I sat there and watched him and he won every race and I told him he rocked. My daughter has asked me to do a Harry Potter marathon movie weekend with her.
Its funny, when you ask them what they would like from you, its not things, its always your time.

  3. MeWhoAmI….this is priceless. Our time is priceless, you are so right. And even as much as I know this all to be true it sure helps to get a thorough reminding of it on a regular basis. Why is it we “know” this but we continually fall in to our bad habits of not living it? Thank you!

Thank you. That is a great question. We know it, but forget it constantly. It’s so easy to get caught up in life and forget the most important parts of it.

  5. You are so very right, it is important to be there for the souls as we love and care for. Our time are the most important and also why we need to use it wisely. Thanks for a great post – as usual.
