In a World of Billions

alone 2

In a world of billions, alone sits one. He waits for someone to notice him, yet no one does. He needs someone to see his pain, to hear his cry, but his tears are invisible. As others pass by, he watches their smiles and hears their laughter. Surrounded in his own darkness, their light shines before him. He reaches out for it, but is too weak to grab hold. Tired and worn, he drops back to the ground, lonely and afraid. Hopelessness prevails. He stares blankly ahead, unseen and unheard. In a world of billions, alone sits one.

alone

In a world of over 7 billion people, it’s hard to imagine that there are so many out there who feel alone. But, there are. All around us, are people who feel that they have no one to turn to. No one who fully understands them, or the hurt that plagues them. They go throughout their day making small talk, in an attempt to blind people from seeing their pain.

Once the day is over and they crawl into their beds, no longer can they keep their demons at bay. As others tuck themselves in for the night, they have no idea that their loved one is crying in the room next door. By morning their tears have been wiped away and all visible signs are erased.

Across miles, we hope that through a special bond, we would know when someone is crying out for help. But in most cases, we don’t. We can only hear their words. Their pain is kept below the surface, in an effort to protect us. Sadly, in the meantime, they are being slowly suffocated by the darkness that’s surrounding them.

If that’s you…

Don’t be afraid to speak up. You don’t have to hide your feelings in an effort to protect others. People love you. They are there for you, just as you are for them. You need them and they need you. It’s okay to be human. It’s okay to hurt, to feel and to cry. Let others help you. You’re not a burden. You are loved.

There is life beyond the fog. Take someone’s hand and let them guide you out.

Thank you so much for this. As I sink lower and lower into a major depressive episode, it is very hard for me to reach out– thank you for the reminder that if I do, I will be heard.

I love how you write anyway, but this blog hits right in the solar plexus for me today.

  10. An uplifting perspective on loneliness, we would not be human if we did not experience it at some point in our lives. Its the choices we make to fill the void that matter. I myself enjoy my own company, yet I have been in a crowded room and felt alone.

I agree. It’s up to us how we fill that void and how we respond to the loneliness when it occurs. I too enjoy my own company, and in most cases enjoy being alone more than I do a room full of people. It’s interesting how people can feel alone in a crowded room, but it happens frequently in people’s lives.
