What Impression Do You Give Others?

talking

If you were defined by the words you speak, what kind of person would you be?

——————————————————————————————————–

When people listen to you speak, what impression do you give them? Are you proud, humble, happy or grumpy? Critical or compassionate? We may not think that our words help to define how people see us, but they do.

This post is for One-Liner Wednesday.

  2. Funny you post on words- I have just come out of a season of several months of study and meditation on words. Biblically words have the power of life and death. Life and death. We do not take that too seriously until we are the victim of someone’s vitriol. It wounds the soul. To some extent our words actually define who we are and what we will become. I have literally been around people that have killed themselves by daily pronouncing ” I know I will have a heart attack” or ” I bet I have cancer ” – sure enough many fulfil their own prophecy. It isn’t all doom and gloom though because the opposite applies too. Speak things that are praiseworthy and excellent over yourself and your children. 90% of what we fear will happen, never occurs. Fear is a pair of handcuffs around your soul. Unlock yourself.

Well said. Our tongue is our strongest weapon. It’s up to us how we use it. Will we let it destroy ourselves and others, or use it to encourage others and to speak positive into situations? I believe wholeheartedly that a person can bring illness upon themselves just by the words they speak. If we play the same words of doom over and over in our head, we will begin feeling the symptoms and the stress from that can lead to the development of the illness. Are all illnesses due to our thinking? No, but some are. The same goes with how we feel about ourselves. (I am… ugly/pretty, fat/fit, successful/loser) We are what we say we are. Our words have power. We should use them wisely, whether spoken to ourselves or to those around us.

Well, our words do give an impression to people. I suppose the importance of that differs for each individual. It depends on whether or not they want to have people see them in a good light; to be likable and approachable.

That is sooo true. I tell my fiancé that every day. I believe people would think, I have a speech or stuttering problem or that I don’t know what I am saying because there are times where I get my words twisted and tangled. And others would think I am a know-it-all bitch and I can live with that 🙂

You make a good point here. Our speech can change depending on who we are around. It therefore can also change how people perceive us in different settings. In one setting, we may be kind and gentle and in the other more comfortable to “let it all out” and vent our frustrations. Overall though, I’d like to be seen as the first one.

  6. I think I am ‘all of the above’. For the most part I can handle myself okay with words and do feel they are our greatest tool in life. They should be wielded with care.
