Makeup, Double Standards and Morning Surprises

makeup

If I were a man, I’d want to wake up with the same woman that I went to bed with. I wouldn’t want to be surprised when I roll over, wondering “Who is that?” Apparently, that is not how all men think. They are attracted to the idea of perfection, regardless of whether it’s fake or not. I bet they’re glad that women aren’t that way.

Men walk around fresh faced all day long and no one says a word about it. Obviously, that’s because they look great just the way they are, right? Otherwise women would never be attracted to them. So why is it that women are frowned upon when they try to do the same? Why can’t we be appreciated for our natural beauty, just as men are?

Most women were taught from a young age (usually by example), that wearing makeup is just a normal part of life. So we try on our mother’s lipstick and mascara, and soon what started out as a fun dress-up game becomes a necessity.

We shudder at the idea of even stepping out onto our front porch, fearing that we might be seen bare-faced by someone passing by. A person ringing the doorbell early in the morning turns into a race to see how quickly we can apply a layer of foundation before answering the door.

If you think about it, it’s all very ridiculous really. But sadly, we are made to believe that in order to be attractive we must look flawless. We can’t be seen any other way.

I’m not anti-makeup, but there is no question that wearing it destroys women’s self-esteem. You may say, “No it doesn’t.” Okay. Then next time you go out in public don’t wear any. No concealer, foundation, mascara, nothing. If the thought of that scares you…

For many women, that thought is terrifying. But, it shouldn’t be that way. We shouldn’t be made to feel like we have to hide behind a mask in order to be accepted. Instead, we should be made to feel confident in our own skin.

Just as men do, we should be able to walk with our heads held high and present the real us to the world.

Walk with confidence and let your natural beauty shine, which in my opinion, is the most beautiful of all.

  1. Back when we were dating, my wife used to say she was going to make herself pretty whenever she’d put on makeup. I told her she was merely accentuating her beauty and shouldn’t say that it made her beautiful. She hardly wears any makeup now and I’m totally fine with that.

Good for you! That is exactly what a woman should hear. She needs to know that she’s pretty with it and without it.

That’s what my mom used to say: I go make myself look pretty… Now imagine what effect it has in a girl! My dad used to say exactly what you said. He told her that she was pretty enough without and I’m sure that it was because of this that I never thought I need to put on heaps of make-up. Crazy thought… You need to go make yourself look pretty…

  3. I only wear makeup on the rare occasion – and never, ever, at work. When I worked in law I never did, when I worked retail I never did, and now I work in a warehouse I surely don’t! It’s kind of fun to become someone else, sometimes. But real me is my naked face!

I never understood the whole makeup thing. i don’t know when it started, who perpetuated it or why it hasn’t gone the way of corsets.

  5. I don’t wear makeup. There MAY have been twice in my life where I had some on. Against my will. That’s it. Have no desire to sport that weight upon my face! 🙂

Wow, only twice? That’s impressive. Good for you. Self confidence is so important. Also, from what I’ve seen from those who have rarely, if ever, worn it is that it tends to make their skin stay youthful.

  6. I always wear makeup for business, because image. But since I work at home, I go days without wearing it 🙂 Even when I run to Walmart! But, I also have my weekend makeup, some powder, blush, and eye shadow and I’m set! 🙂

I understand that. Unfortunately, people are so used to women wearing it that it is frowned up when we do not. It’s wonderful though that you feel confident enough to not wear it all the time when you go out. Great balance.

My feeling is that women thing about makeup a lot more than men do, Me Who. I mostly make “uck” faces in real life when I see somebody who I think is wearing way too much.

Luckily, I wasn’t brought up this way. My Mum always refused to get me foundation and the likes because she said it would ruin my skin. Thanks to her, my skin is pretty good at the age of 38 😉 I do like eye make-up a lot, and that’s the only thing I use. And I am not afraid to go anywhere without make-up 🙂

That’s great to hear. It’s good that she taught you self confidence from an early age. She was absolutely right about keeping the skin healthy. Some ladies I know who have never put even a dab on, look years younger than they are with their youthful/untouched skin.

I bought into the makeup thing while I was younger but now I don’t always consider wearing it. Some days I wear it because I want to. Anyway, I was always told I didn’t look like I felt good when I went makeup free—which I ‘used’ to go home early from work. 😀 Oh, and today’s makeup styles are far too much. A little bit goes a long way. Makeup shouldn’t scream ‘look at my makeup’.

Nothing to beat the natural look, really, as no make-up can create beauty from the lack of it. It can merely conceal certain flaws and, at best, accentuate beauty. So just be promptly and confidently at the door the next time it rings, mewhoami, and I will be there to say ‘wow, hello there’…

I agree completely. Beauty is found in purity. It took me a while to feel comfortable going out without it (having worn it all my life), but I’ve found that it is very freeing and with much less hassle.

I quit wearing make up way back in the 80s when I was in basic training, just too much trouble to stay in regulation standards. Fresh-face is all my husband has known except on really special occasions where I wanted to be dressed up. He has always preferred fresh-face and asks when I am going to take the stuff off if I ever do put it on. Just be yourself, with or without make-up, it doesn’t matter what the outside looks like, what matters is your heart, attitude, and the way you treat others.

What a great husband you have. Women should be made to feel confident and it sounds like that’s exactly what your husband has done for you. I don’t remember the last time I wore makeup. I rather not deal with it and I’ve found that our natural beauty shines through a lot better without it.

Well I see I am in the minority, but I never leave the house without putting on make up. Not alot, it looks natural, but I feel eyeliner and mascara bring my eyes out, and a thin coat of foundation covers the uneven tone, spider veins and spots on my face. I always wear lipstick too as my lips are washed out. I feel better about myself when I know I look my best.

That is perfectly okay. 🙂 It’s good to feel good about ourselves. I don’t think that makeup is a bad thing, as long as we don’t allow it to ruin our self esteem and can feel comfortable without it. I curl my lashes and wear lip gloss, but only to give me the “I’m awake” look instead of still half-asleep. 🙂
