Lost Time

Lost time

One day you wake up, only to realize that you never knew you were sleeping. You had been walking around, breathing, living, and even socializing with those around you. But it had all taken place in a dreamlike state. Your body was playing the part, but you were nowhere to be found.

Then suddenly, you wake up. Days have gone by. Time has been lost. What happened? You try to think back, but your memory is foggy. Nothing is clear. You don’t know what you did, where you went, or who you spoke to. Where were you for all of those days?

Like a turtle, when difficult times come, we sometimes tuck our head into the safety of our shell. Because the situation is too hard to face, we hide. We bury ourselves within ourselves. Our mind is so consumed by our problems, that even though we’re living in the world, and life is going on all around us, we cannot see it. We’re not a part of it.

Worry, overwhelming stress, and times of depression can cause us to sleep through life. It causes us to lose time, days, and sometimes years. We continue to live, but we’re not truly living. Only our body is. Our legs take steps. Our mouth speaks. Our hands accomplish tasks. But all the while, our mind is sleeping.

We are not conscious of our actions, or our words. We are only aware of the thoughts that plague us day and night. The thoughts that keep us prisoner within our shell.

Stress and worry can weaken us, and if we allow it to, it can take over our lives. We lose so much time worrying and being stressed. Time that we can’t get back. Our problems will pass in time, but meanwhile there’s a whole world out there that needs us to be a part of it.

A world of people who don’t need us to be asleep. They need us to be present.

  2. This sounds for me like having a bad clinical depression, have been there and I’m grateful that I found the light again.

Food for thought. I think many wander through life barely there, but sometimes I think that we are in safe mode. We do what we can to keep our head above water, to allow us time to recover, quietly, until we are ready to be part of the world once more, but return we will.

  7. I find it fascinating when someone writes something that others can relate to so clearly. Yet may not have been able to write it so clearly. Such a clear and accurate statement MeWhoAMI.

Although I’m not glad that people can relate, I’m happy that the words are clear. Sometimes when we write from the heart, we don’t know if it’ll make any sense at all. 🙂

      • I’ve had that experience….I’ve written something I thought was so profound or heartfelt. Then had comments that express confusion or question the meaning. And truth be told …. when that has happened, I’ve often reread what I wrote and it didn’t feel the same as when I wrote it. THAT has happened more than once. I wonder what that is all about too. (I love these contemplations.)

This one I can relate to because of my clinical depression. Your words about worry and stress are so true.

I’ve been hiding out again from WordPress and part of it has been that overwhelmed feeling; that bummed out feeling and being stressed out by work and personal issues. This is so fitting! I keep telling myself I need to grab life by the horns and take control but thus far it seems to be easier said than done lol. I’m glad I came across this though…means I better get my rear back to work so I can have this evening to do the things I need to! 🙂 Great post!

Sorry to hear that you’ve been overwhelmed with these feelings lately. They can take a toll on us, that’s for sure. I’m glad too then, that you came across this today. Hope your evening is productive and that the bummed out feeling clears out real soon.
