“Take my hand,” Luke said softy to Maria as he gently led her onto the boat. With the stars and moonlit sky above them, they rowed away from the shore. Silence surrounded them as Luke pulled a ring from his pocket, knelt down before Maria and proposed.
“Yes! Of course I will!”
Sixteen years later, while staring at the abandoned boat, memories from that fateful night flooded Luke’s mind. The storm had come out of nowhere. He had held onto Maria with all his might, but the wind-raged waves proved too strong for him. In a blink, she was gone.
This is a part of Friday Fictioneers, hosted by Rochelle Wisoff-Fields.
And the ring with her! Oh my!

Yes and both of them irretrievable.

A lament and fitting to the prompt. Boats, the sea, lost loves, lost lives. It’s a huge tradition/genre including musically, where the lament is universal. In Breton ‘gwerz’, German ‘klagelied’, Italian ‘lamentare’ … š

Thank you. You’re right about that. It kind of touches on all of the main topics.

It’s interesting that a number of comments focus on the loss of the ring. š

Oh…such sorrow. So well done. Sadness is best when it’s only fiction.

Dear Whoamyou,
And there went the ring, too. Lost legacy. Good story.

Yes, both gone into the depths. Maybe one day the ring will be found by another to make their own story.

Dear Mewhoami,
That might just be the shortest engagement in history. Sad.

I hadn’t thought of that. You are absolutely right.

This would make the beginnings of a good paranormal story. I like the clean break you do for ‘then’ and ‘now’.

Oddly enough, I thought about that. Hmm…ideas, ideas.

Well done! I instantly thought of a song called “The Lighthouse’s Tale” by Nickel Creek (not to be confused with Nickelback lol). Fabulous but incredibly sad lil’ tune…I recommend checking into it. š The heartache of loss is incredible. You capture that so well.

Thank you! I will definitely check it out. The heartache of a lost first love is never forgotten, especially when lost in such a tragic way.

Poor Maria. She is certainly copping a hard time in this flash prompt. Your flash was great. So much joy and then bang gone. You could feel the desperation as he tried to save her.

She sure is. First a lost baby and now this. Thank you. His desperation is what I was trying to portray. I’m glad it came across.
