Secrets of a New Home

gravesite

While out running errands today, a phone call came in. Too busy to answer it and not knowing who it was, I let it go to voice-mail. After arriving home and putting everything away, I remembered the message.

As it began, all I could hear was static and some strange noises in the background. I continued listening, hoping that the signal would clear up, so that at least part of the message could be made out.

Finally, after about two minutes, I could understand the voice on other end. A man said, “I’m sorry. I should’ve told you months ago. Bye.” His voice was shaky and he sounded nervous.

That made me nervous. “Should’ve told me what?” I wondered. Not knowing who he was, and now very curious about what he had to tell me, I called the number back. After a few rings, a man answered.

He must have recognized my number, because before I could get out a single word, he began apologizing for having not told me sooner. The more he talked, the more nervous I became.

Finally, I stopped him. “Sir, I couldn’t make out the message when you called and I have no idea what you’re talking about. What should you have told me?”

“Oh, ma’am. I’m sorry. This is Jack for TDC Realty. When I sold the house to you a few months ago, I saw that there were a couple of burial plots in the backyard. I thought that maybe they were empty, so I went to dig them up. They weren’t empty! I didn’t want to lose the sale of the house, so I planted some flowers on top of both of them to make them look like flower gardens. Please forgive me.”

“So Jack, you’re telling me that there’s people under those two beautiful flower gardens in the center of my backyard?”

“Yes, ma’am. I am so sorry for not telling you sooner.”

“Well Jack, now that you’ve made your confession, perhaps I should make mine. I’m the one who buried them there.”

Using the daily prompt from The Daily Post: Bad Signal – Someone’s left you a voicemail message, but all you can make out are the last words: “I’m sorry. I should’ve told you months ago. Bye.” Who is it from, and what is this about?
