The Little Things

breathing

It is easy for us to be thankful for the big things in life, such as our children, family, friends, and careers. But, what about the small things in life? The small things that are actually not that small at all, but the ones that we tend to take for granted.

The not-so-small things in life that we do everyday, many of them without a second thought. Most of us woke up today with breath in our lungs, vision to see the world around us, a voice to speak with, a nose that works, and ears that hear.

Many of us were able to get out of bed, walk, eat, and use the restroom. Did you sleep last night? Were you able to function well enough to operate a car, or go to work today? Do you have good cognitive health? Do you know your spouse’s name, or what year it is?

Everything that you are capable of doing, is something to be thankful for. Imagine your life if you were unable to do those things?

People wake up everyday having to cope with the loss of an ability that they’ve always had, or lacking a vital bodily function that their body requires to survive.

The saying is true, that we don’t fully realize the value of what we have until we lose it. So along with the big things in life, we should also be thankful for the not-so-small things. For without them, our everyday lives would be much different.

This is something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately. It’s so hard to force yourself to be thankful for these things until you’ve sort of experience coming close to losing them. Or having someone close to you lose them.

Yes, exactly. I must agree with you there. When we, or people close to us lose some of those things, it really makes us appreciate just how valuable they are or were. It also makes us appreciate all the other things that we do still have.

  3. Love this….it is a part of my “Grateful” list. Sit down and write 100 things to be grateful for…. you have to put the small things on there because without them? You don’t have the big ones! πŸ™‚

  5. MeWhoAmI….this hits close to home. I see these things almost daily because of my job. I can’t recall the days when I’ve walked away from a situation and looked towards the sun or the falling rain and given thanks for what I can do now. And also contemplate the future….

If we pay attention to the people around us; at work, home, and even at the store we will see so many things to be thankful for. I imagine that with a job where you see these things all the time, this would certainly be something you would consider often. It’s so easy for us to take our abilities for granted, until we see others lose theirs or we do ourselves. Life is so short and our abilities don’t always remain till the end. It’s so important to live – today. Thank you so much for your comment!
