Youthful

old woman dancing

Many years ago, I worked in the Alzheimer’s unit of an assisted-living residence nearby. It was by far the best and most rewarding job I have ever had. The pay wasn’t great, but the people made up for it.

There was such a variety of residents there. Some were quiet and rarely spoke a word. Others were angry and had constant tantrums. Some were known for their escape attempts and had to be watched diligently. Then there was the youthful one, Flo.

I believe that if Flo had been given the opportunity, she would have had so much to share with the world. This is what I think she would have said.

Dear You,

Enjoy life, no matter what comes your way. Don’t let others, illnesses, or old age stop you from living. Be youthful! Growing older doesn’t mean you have to be stiff.

Smile, all the time. Your smile is contagious, and so is your joy. Be joyful! Don’t allow inhibitions to get in your way. Be you, and be free!

Appreciate every moment, each day. Rejoice when you wake up. Don’t get out of bed grudgingly. It’s a new day! Get out with a bounce in your step! Skip down the hallway. Have a good time!

Dance, all the time. Live. Play. Sing in the rain! Kick up your feet. Laugh!

You’re not dead until you die. So live!

Sincerely,

Flo

This amazing woman was in her upper 80’s, but one would never know it by watching her. She was more youthful than many 30 year olds are. She was carefree and had no inhibitions. Flo was Flo, no matter what time of day it was, or who was in the room.

In a place where darkness often creeps in, Flo was the light. Everyone loved her. She brightened many lives, including my own, and brought joy to those who needed it most.

Flo not only lived, she danced.

This post is for today’s Writing 101 assignment, hosted by The Daily Post.

Assignment: Pick up the nearest book and flip to page 29. What’s the first word that jumps off the page? (Mine was “youthful.”) Use this word as your springboard for inspiration. Today’s twist: write the post in the form of a letter.

Lovely! I’m going to get up with a spring in my step tomorrow, instead of hanging on to the duvet for dear life!

This post is so joyful. 🙂

My Dad lives in an Independent Living apartment, part of a large complex that offers completely independent duplex living up through 24/7 Alzheimer’s care, plus a separate Physical Therapy section. (Living so far away from him, I’m very grateful for all of that!) I can’t travel there very often, but I love to visit him — not just to see him, but to interact with others who live in the facility and dine in the dining area.

The Flos of the world are such a gift; thank you for sharing your memories of this particular one!

By the way you describe it, it sounds like your dad’s residence is very nice and well equipped. That would be a great relief, to know that he’s in a good place. I’m glad that you visit him when you can. I know, by working there, that every visit means so much to them.

I’ve never known anyone like Flo, but sure hope to meet many more as the years go by, just without Alzheimer’s preferably. It’s such a terrible disease.
