We say that we love others, and we do.
We say that we would do anything to make someone else happy, and we would.
We say that we would never intentionally hurt those we care about, and we wouldn’t.
Then life happens…
and selfishness wins.

I know what you mean.

It’s sad that circumstances cloud peoples’ judgments, and sometimes cause them to do things that they never would have imagined doing.

Unfortunately, I believe that we are all selfish every now and then, whether intentional or not.

Is putting yourself first necessarily selfish – or are we all as deserving of attention and happiness ( including and especially looking after ourself?)

It depends on the situation, on what the action is. Some situations are selfish, but needful. Others are selfish, but avoidable. And sometimes people act selfishly, even without a selfish intent. We must consider the consequences of our actions and how they will effect others. We can’t always consider just ourselves and what will make us feel good at the moment. Our decisions have a much greater impact on others than we often take time to consider or realize.

Yes and although the situation can greatly vary, we have all undoubtedly been guilty from time to time.
