Destination Anywhere

It’s that time again! Warm weather is settling in, the sun is hot and the green grass is making its yearly comeback. Do you know what that means? Vacation time!

I love to travel. If it were possible, I would travel year round, minus coming home for a few days here and there. There is so much to see in this world and a person would never run out of places to visit.

Traveling doesn’t require going to distant lands. There is adventure and beauty everywhere. During the summers, my son and I spend as much time as we can driving mountain roads, hiking and playing in the rivers. We may not be far from home, but it’s still a getaway. That time of relaxation is important, for both the mind and body.

Even though we can go to destinations near our home, there is something very freeing about traveling farther away. I grew up loving road trips and still do.  It’s enjoyable to be able to stop along the way to visit places, you wouldn’t otherwise know existed. Or pass by the 5-legged cow sign in Kansas and wonder “does that cow ever die?” It’s been there since I was a kid.

Then, there is traveling by train. I had the opportunity a few times, to take the train back and forth when visiting my mother, and loved it! Since the train’s route goes through the mountains and far away from the highway, you get to see nature in a whole new way. In the summertime, a variety of wildlife can be viewed from the train windows, staring back at you as you pass them by. The rivers flow gently, as they follow the train along its path. Beauty is everywhere.

In the winter, you can see cars in rural towns buried in snow and kids sledding down hills. The trees are white and the rivers are iced over. The peace of winter surrounds you. If you’re not in a hurry, then train travel is a great way to go!

Of course, you get to meet a lot of very interesting people on the train as well. Throughout my travels, I met many fascinating people, from all walks of life. Some of them, I kept in contact with for years afterward.

Finally, there’s flying. That is something I never get tired of, unlike those who frequently travel for work or those who fear it. I still get excited while watching the people and cars below transform into ants. The view, from thousands of miles up in the air is stunning. That’s especially true when flying over mountains ranges, lakes and lush forests.

The mini-rebel in me, also enjoys the feeling of liberation as the plane takes off. Then there’s the greatest reward of traveling; arriving at the destination. Even if I’ve been there several times, it never gets old.

Whether it be by train, car, or airplane, my all time favorite activity is traveling.  Therefore, there was no hesitation in finding the answer to the question, “What is the one word or phrase that immediately cheers you up when you hear it?”

My answer: “Your reservation is complete.”
