On the table sat a basket of apples. Each one was perfectly formed and flawless. There were no cracks, indentations or discoloring to be seen. As I dug deeper into the pile, there was one apple in particular that caught my eye. At first glance it looked unblemished, but hidden on the very edge was a tiny crevice in the skin.
Assuming that it would be the first to spoil, I decided that it should be eaten before all the others. The first bite was juicy and the taste was delicious. Bite after bite, I continued eating the apple. Much to my disappointment, the closer I got to the core the more bitter the apple became.
With one more bite, I became sickened by what I saw. The core of the apple was dark in color and the smell was awful. It was rotten. Disgusted, I immediately threw it into the trash.
What had appeared to be only a small and insignificant blemish on the surface, was in fact a sign of the rotten core within.
I find so many people like that – they look flawless on the outside but are rotten inside. Goes to show the old adage “Can’t judge a book by it’s cover” is as true today as the day it was coined!
And, it shows that sometimes all it takes in a small chink in our armor and we too, can become rotten on the inside.

Yes they do. You just never know what’s lurking within. Even the one closest to you could have a rotten core without you knowing. It’s interesting what skin can hide.
That’s a good addition. You’re absolutely right. The smallest of circumstances can cause the greatest amount of damage.

I like this…it fills my mind with many thoughts. One about how we hide our perceived ugliness from others, and another of those who have a whole bunch of rotten inside who fool us with near perfection with a slight blemish. Good post mewhoami!

I think most people have something ugly hidden within them. Some more than others and some put on a facade all the way around. Unfortunately for those who are able to fool us, we often times don’t find out until it’s too late. Thank you!

That’s a much better way of defining the rotten ones…we often times don’t find out until it’s too late. I’ve met a few of those.

Enjoyed reading this because it not only was well written but it got me thinking about life choices we make. Thank you

Thank you. So many of our life choices are made off of those first impressions. Sometimes those first impressions go on for months before the reality is revealed. Then sometimes we’re just too blind to see what is right in front of us. At other times, we’re the ones putting on the facade.

Sometimes things that are rotten to the core appear perfectly unblemished also. (Dang, Kate beat me to that one).

I absolutely agree. I knew a ‘Mr Perfect’ once. The same ‘Mr Perfect’ who I now have a restraining order against. What you see and what you hear is not always what you get.
