A Friend

friends

What is a friend? I used to think that a friend was someone who was always around. Someone you could call up and spend time with at any given moment. I’ve learned however, that those qualifications aren’t needed for a person to be considered a friend.

Outside of family, I only have a couple of friends. Neither of them do I see regularly. As a matter of fact, I rarely see them at all, and seldom do we talk. But I know without a doubt, that I could count on them to be there if I ever needed them to be and vice versa. No questions asked.

I don’t need daily confirmation to know that someone is a true friend. Time and circumstances have already proven it.

To me, a friend is someone who…

…will stand by you through thick and thin.

…you can be real with.

…you can share your thoughts with, without being judged.

…you can count on.

…you rejoice with when good things happen to them.

…you will gladly lend a helping hand to.

…encourages you and you them.

…you see the best in, even when they can’t.

…you can go without seeing for years, but still know that they’re there.

A friend is a friend, unconditionally.

Friendships are not about quantity. They’re about quality. I may not have many friends, but the ones I do have, are invaluable to me.

“True friendship comes when the silence between two people is comfortable.” – David Tyson Gentry

“The language of friendship is not words but meanings.” – Henry David Thoreau

“A friend is one that knows you as you are, understands where you have been, accepts what you have become, and still, gently allows you to grow.” – William Shakespeare

And my new favorite –

“A true friend is someone who thinks that you are a good egg even though he knows that you are slightly cracked.” ~ By: Bernard Meltzer

  1. Beautiful points about beautiful friendships. I can apply these to a few people and count myself extremely lucky.

  2. I only really have one. Sadly, since she decided to become a parent, she no longer seems to stick with “…you can share your thoughts with, without being judged”. It sucks, but the rest of the list still applies, at least.

I totally agree with all you say about true friends. I am proud to have one true friend who knows and loves me for who I am. We may only see each other once or twice a year but knowing someone is there for me and I for her gives me enormous comfort and joy. Great post and quotes. Love to you from Jenna 😉

It is comforting, isn’t it? That’s the great part about true friends – we don’t have to see them all the time. They’re there and we know it. It’s wonderful that you have that one true friend.
