Riding in Style

red ferrari3For the past couple years, every time I’ve rented a car, the rental company gives me a Ford Focus. Those are cute and excellent on gas, but it gets boring getting the same car time after time. Renting cars is sometimes necessary, but it’s also a fun way to try out vehicles that you wouldn’t normally drive.

So last week my mother was in town, and we decided to rent a Ferrari for the day! It was beautiful, stylish, sporty and we felt like a million bucks cruising around in that thing. But driving it seemed so surreal, because how many people get the chance to drive such an exotic car? I certainly never thought I would.

The day was interesting to say the least. I don’t like getting attention, so obviously I didn’t think about that before renting the car. As we drove around town everyone was staring. Our first stop upon leaving the rental agency, was a convenience store. When we came out of the store, people were crowded around the car. We almost had to run over them, just to get out of the parking lot. It was ridiculous.

From there, we went to the home of a family friend of ours. We spent a while inside drinking coffee and catching up. After a couple hours, we went to leave and I stood there looking up and down the street for my car. My car, not the rental car. No wonder I couldn’t find it. Finally, I looked up at that magnificent red vehicle directly in front me and stood there in awe, still amazed by it.

My mother and I jumped in and off we went. For a few more hours we enjoyed driving around in that fancy car and of course enjoyed each others’ company as well. Everything was wonderful while the car was moving. It was when we would park the car, that we would run into problems, because of all the people that would stop to stare. By the end of the day, we were so tired of dealing with the swarms of people that would crowd around us. It got to the point where we were looking forward to returning the car.

Early that evening, we drove the car back to the rental agency. Even with all the annoying attention we received, it sure was fun to drive that Ferrari.

Then, I woke up.

You had me then. Way to build up the story and then tear it all down in one sentence. πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€
Many years ago (in my past) my ex and I hired a stretch limousine rather than call a taxi to take out to dinner. That was fun!

Nice! I’m glad it worked. Originally, I was going to simply write ‘I had a dream about…” but thought it would be much more fun this way.

Hiring a limo must have been so enjoyable. How romantic and unique that would be. I love that idea.

My wife was born and grew up in California. I am a New Yorker. The first time she took me west to see her home state, we rented a Mustang convertible in San Diego, took our sweet time headed north, and ended up in San Francisco 10 days later. I’d never driven a Mustang. I’d never driven a convertible. To guide that baby around San Diego, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Monterey Peninsula and San Fran was the time of my life. People must have seen my smile, because so many waved as we drove by.

That sounds like so much fun! What great memories that must have made for you both. We’re here on this earth for such a short time, so why not live it up every once in a while. Good for you two!

Yes, it was a thrill I’ll never forget, each city its own gem. We re-drove the route that Karen had taken in a camper with her parents and siblings when she was growing up, and that was so cool for both of us.

Oh what fun! I love it. I just knew I would read we (in that amazing Rented car) had done a face-plant with that dadgum RTD. πŸ™‚

That certainly would have been interesting, but I think one close call was enough. πŸ™‚ Can you imagine that happening in a car like that? I sure wouldn’t want to pay that bill.

  9. Awww, you should try it once! Or ask for a ‘muscle car’ next rental opportunity – like a Dodge Charger. My best friend did that and she loved being able to try out new vehicles!
