Who Would Marry Me?

wedding couple

“Who in the world would want to marry me?”

Linda had grown up, being made fun of for her awkward appearance and learning disabilities. Educationally, she couldn’t keep up with her peers and the amblyopia (lazy eye) that she was born with, caused partial blindness in her right eye at a very young age. Upon looking at her, it was obvious that she was different.

For the first 22 years of her life, she was bullied, laughed at and mocked. Her parents did everything they could to help her catch up with her peers and tried their best to have her eyesight corrected, but to no avail.

Linda watched as her sisters grew older, hung out with their friends, went on dates and eventually got married. She did none of these things. All she ever had was her mother and herself. Her future seemed hopeless and she felt certain that her life would be spent under the roof of her parent’s home.

Thinking back on her past she said, “Everyone always teased me. I never thought that I would get married. Who would want to marry someone like me?”

She was wrong. Someone did want to marry her. In fact, a man flew half way across the world for her. They met over the phone, through a mutual friend. Their conversations soon led to love, and him flying across the ocean to meet her. When they set eyes on each other, there was no doubt that they would be married. They were in love.

He spent two months in Linda’s country, helping her to complete all the necessary paperwork she needed in order to leave. Then off to the United States they went. That was 21 years ago. They now have 3 children and are still happily married.

When she looked in the mirror, all she saw was an awkward, unattractive, and worthless woman looking back at her. Her husband on the other hand, saw a beautiful, loving and honest woman. A woman he could easily spend the rest of his life with, loving her and caring for her in a way that she had never experienced.

Her story is a story of hope, to all those who have a false belief that they are unworthy of love. She may not be the type of woman you would see on a magazine cover, but she is the type you would read about on the inner pages. Her story, her life, and the giving nature she was born with, has so much more meaning than her appearance ever could. Her unique qualities make her beautiful.

At some point, everyone’s beauty will fade. So be confident of who you are and of what makes you YOU, for that is where your true beauty lies.

Lovely! It truly is what is on the inside which makes one beautiful. But what do I know, I think frogs and lizards are beautiful—in their own way, and I have no idea what’s on the inside of those critters. 🙂

  2. My son, who is on the autism spectrum, learning and developmentally disabled, had a difficult life in school and as a young adult. A young woman came his way. She has OCD, so she keeps things orderly and in place. She created a home atmosphere in which he thrived! With the structure she provided with HER disability, he learned to thrive with HIS! They are now married and have a baby on the way. With all of my son’s difficulties, I thought finding someone to love and marry would be out of the question, but it wasn’t. It proves the old adage there is someone for everyone!

Thank you for this! That is my dream for him – to have the opportunity to marry someone who will help him to thrive, while in turn he helps her. It is wonderful to hear that this happened with your son. That makes me very happy. Indeed, there is the ideal person out there for everyone. When they find them, it will have been well worth the wait, no matter how long it takes.
