Silence of Winter

winter benchSummer is my favorite season, but there is something very special about winter. Silence. It’s as of the snow soaks in all of the noise, leaving nothing but peace in it’s place. It blocks out all impurities. It’s beautiful.

Walking outside in the early mornings of winter, are the most peaceful moments of the year. It’s quiet and calming. It’s as if the atmosphere itself is meditating. Not even the cold can break through the peace of a winter morning.

On winter nights there is happiness to be felt everywhere. A glance through a window provides a look into the comfort of home. The tree is brightly lit, while in the background is a flickering fire, bringing warmth to those inside.

During the day, children are out making snow angels and having fun-filled snow ball fights. Laughter is heard all around. Smiles are shared as families come together. Long over due calls are made to loved ones. Love is in the air, felt through neighborhoods and across state lines.

Beauty can be found in every season, but nothing can compare to the peace of winter.

Your winter sounds like it is out of a story book. Here we have wet & windy, driving rain, freezing fog or on the occasion when we have snow it looks like a Christmas card for a few hours, before becoming wet, mucky & slushy, then freezing and the roads & pavements turn treacherous.

Your winters remind me a bit of the winters we had in the south. They were miserable. Here, it’s beautiful until day 2 after a snow storm. That’s when it all turns into a brown, slushy mess.

I, too, like the silence of winter. In many ways I feel comforted by it. During the summer, I don’t feel this contentment, and find myself a little on edge.
